Frequently Asked Questions
Everything You Need to Know
Do I need a licence before booking driving lessons?
Yes, you must be in possession of a valid UK provisional or full licence.
I will do an online check of your licence before your first lesson.
If you have an international driving licence please contact me for further information.

Can I start driving lessons before taking my theory test?
Yes, you can. In fact, I believe it is better that you combine theory and practical training. This way you can put your theory knowledge into practice and see how those two separate skills work together.
If you have already passed your theory test you have two years to pass your practical test.

How many lessons will I need?
Everyone is different and learns at a different pace. On average the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (the DVSA) estimate that students need around 35-40 hours tuition before being ready to take their test.
I will always keep you informed of how you are progressing, identifying skills that are going well and subjects that need more work.
What car will I be driving?
The tuition vehicle is a Mercedes A180 diesel hatchback. It is a manual gearbox with auto stop start features. Dual control pedals are fitted for additional safety.
You can also do lessons in your own car by prior arrangement.

Do you include any free training materials?
Yes, I'm always looking to add extra value to my driving lessons and encourage self study.

Every learner gets free access to my Millsy's Driver Training App (Total Drive). On it there is a full training syllabus, training videos and links to other training material.

I also provide other printed/digital learning materials from my portfolio where needed.

What if I have a learning or physical disability?

Having a learning or physical disability does not necessarily stop you learning to drive. Firstly you should contact the DVSA for advice on obtaining a provisional licence. They will decide if any restrictions are needed.

Before qualifying as a driving instructor I worked with adult learning disabilities in a care environment.

I often teach learners with different levels of physical and learning disabilities with a successful outcome.

When you book your first lesson you should discuss what your needs are so we can prepare a successful learning syllabus.

What insurance do you have?
I have full insurance for tuition in my training car. Along with the vehicle insurance I have £10M public liability insurance.

Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes, all driving instructors have a cancellation policy.
I ask that pupils do their best to give as much notice as possible when changing lessons (minimum 48 hours). Lessons missed or cancelled at short notice are difficult to fill, which is why they are charged at full price.

Where can I find your terms and conditions (T&C's)?
Before booking with any instructor you should always read their terms and conditions.
What if I am very nervous?
Leave the worrying to me! I am calm and very patient, I work hard on making my students to feel relaxed and at ease. There won't be any shouting or bullying behaviour in the car. It's important that I settle any nerves you may have and keep you safe at all times.
i have years of experience and have helped even the most nervous students to build confidence and pass their test.

Yes, there is no greater evidence of the quality of my teaching than the feedback I receive. Check out my testimonials page or follow the link to my Google reviews.

How much will I pay for lessons?
I offer a range of prices depending on the length of lessons and what your requirements are. I offer discounts for block booking in advance and some special offers. Please contact me to find out more.

My pricing reflects the true value of high quality personal tuition, with a fully qualified DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

The price we agree for lessons at the beginning will be transparent, with no hidden extra charges. You will not see any price increase for a minimum period of 6 months after your first lesson.
I don't charge administration fees. For example changing a driving test date on your behalf.

You will not be asked to sign any payment contract. If you don't like your driving lessons with me, you can easily walk away without any cost to you.

Unlike some larger schools I don't offer early lessons at below cost pricing to entice you into a longer more expensive contract.

Beware low cost offers & on-line scams?
Beware low cost offers online! If a deal sounds too good to be true, then there's usually a catch.

What happens on my first lesson?
I will ask to see your licence and check it on the DVSA register. An eyesight check will be done by asking you to read a vehicle registration plate at a distance of about 20 metres.
Ideally, the first lesson is two hours as this will allow time to assess how you like to learn. You will become familiar with the car and its controls. You can expect to start with some basic driving skills. The first lesson will always take place in a quiet residential area away from busy traffic.

Is my driving instructor fully qualified?
Yes, I am a fully qualified driving instructor (ADI).
An Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) has completed full training outlined by the DVSA and appears on the register of Approved Driving Instructor’s. To remain on the register an ADI has to maintain a high standard of instruction in line with DVSA guidelines. Falling below the required professional standard can lead to removal from the register and losing the ability to teach. An ADI will display a green badge.

Some driving schools will allocate you a trainee driving instructor, they will display a pink badge.

Millsy's Driver Training does not use trainee instructors.
