Useful Information
In this section you will find lots of useful information about learning to drive with Millsy's Driver Training.
There are subjects that will help you learn to drive, along with more information about the industry.
Fees and Payments

I offer a range of prices depending on the length of lessons and what your requirements are. I offer discounts for block booking in advance and some special offers. Please contact me to find out more.

My pricing reflects the true value of high quality personal tuition, with a fully qualified DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

The price we agree for lessons at the beginning will be transparent, with no hidden extra charges. You will not see any price increase for a minimum period of 6 months after your first lesson.

I don't charge administration fees. For example changing a driving test date on your behalf.

You will not be asked to sign any payment contract. If you don't like your driving lessons with me, you can easily walk away without any cost to you.

Unlike some larger schools I don't offer early lessons at below cost pricing to entice you into a longer more expensive contract.

Choosing a driving instructor?

All driving instructors MUST display a badge showing their qualification. A fully qualified instructor (ADI) will display a green badge a trainee instructor (PDI) has a pink badge.

An Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) has completed full training outlined by the DVSA and appears on the register of Approved Driving Instructor’s. To remain on the register an ADI has to maintain a high standard of instruction in line with DVSA guidelines. Falling below the required professional standard can lead to removal from the register and losing the ability to teach.

A Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) is an instructor who is in training, but has not completed their final assessment (part 3) by the DVSA. They must be sponsored by Driving School and have completed parts 1 & 2 as outlined by the DVSA. They are not allowed to advertise as an instructor, however the School that sponsors them may advertise on their behalf. A PDI can charge for lessons. A PDI will display a pink badge.

It is a criminal offence to accept any form of payment for driving lessons unless the instructor is registered with the DVSA.
Be aware there are some rogue instructors who are neither an ADI or PDI, and are trading illegally. You putting yourself at risk because its unlikely they will have completed Criminal Record Check and they won't be insured. If suspect they are not legal then you can report them here.
How many lessons will I need?

Everyone is different and learns at a different pace. On average the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (the DVSA) estimate that students need around 35-40 hours tuition before being ready to take their test.

Follow this link to see what the DVSA says.

I will always keep you informed of how you are progressing, identifying skills that are going well and subjects that need more work.

If you need more than 50 hours there are usually some factors holding you back, this will be discussed so you know where improvement is needed and a suitable plan is put in place to help you reach safe test standard.
Ready to Pass Campaign (DVSA)
My training syllabus follows the DVSA ready to pass campaign and guidelines.

Lesson Length & Content
Previously most people took lessons lasting only one hour. However, like most instructors I have found that two hour lessons are more productive for both the learner and the instructor. Saving you time and money in the long run.

Each lesson will have a start, a middle and an end.
The start is a briefing setting out the goals for the lesson, followed by a short setting in period. The middle is where the bulk of the actual driving and learning takes place. The end of the lesson will feature reflective practice and an evaluation of what has been achieved.
You can obviously learn more in a two hour lesson than in a one hour lesson. Sometimes three hour lessons, or longer, are appropriate but it does depend on the individual learner.
Safe driving for life
If you think learning to drive is just about passing the UK driving test then you are wrong.

The first rule (H1) in the highway code states:
"It is important that ALL road users are aware of The Highway Code, are considerate to other road users and understand their responsibility for the safety of others".
Any good driving instructor will teach you all the skills and techniques so you can deal with any situation you encounter on the road. It's what the DVSA call "safe skills for life".
There are 27 core skills to learn (click here to learn more).

In my teaching syllabus you will learn all those safe skills and much more. By learning to drive safely you will be more likely to pass your test at the first attempt and less likely to have a collision in the future.

Theory Test
Before you can book a practical driving test you must first pass your theory test.
I would suggest you start studying for this as soon as you book your first driving lesson.
I do offer theory test training and guidance if required, however the more self study you do the less money you will spend on lessons.

Always book your theory test or practical test directly with the DVSA booking site. Beware of on line scams or third party booking apps that will charge additional fees.

Follow this link to find out what happens on your theory test.
Practical Driving Test
A few weeks before your practical test I will do a mock test. This will give you a good idea of what happens on your test and if you have reached safe test standard.

Beware on-line scams

With demand for driving lessons, theory and practical tests at an all time high there are many ways people are being scammed.

Watch out for fake offers on social media for test dates, test pass certificates and UK licences. You will not only lose money but allow them access to your personal information.

Some companies in the industry are offering driving tests at greatly inflated prices. Unfortunately at the moment this practice is not illegal.

You should only apply for a driving licence via the official government gov.uk web site. Never use third party apps.

Again for driving tests be vary careful of using third party apps. I recommend only booking via the official DVSA website.
Total Drive App
The free learner app allows pupils to see their booked lessons, driving progress, reflective logs and receive reminder messages.
In addition there are training resource videos and links to other useful learning material.
Parents can also have access to see how their son or daughter is progressing.
