Young & Driver Road Safety Reimagined

THT sticker 2_edited.jpg

Each year over 825,000 people in the UK pass their driving test and enjoy the freedom and independence of being a driver. However, newly qualified young drivers are by far the highest risk road user group and road crashes are the number one killer of 17-24 year olds in the UK.

The Honest Truth is a national road safety campaign delivered through collaboration with the emergency services, road safety organisations and driving instructors across the UK. The mission is to deliver no-nonsense, straight-talking road safety education, hence "The Honest Truth".

My Car My Rules

My Car My Rules was born out of a vehicle Olly stopped during a young driver operation he was involved in as a Roads Policing Officer. The car had a 17yr old driver and three of her best friends in the car. When Olly asked the driver about the risks her and her passengers were facing, she passed him a piece of paper she had folded up in the centre console. On it was written My Car My Rules with the following five rules;

  • Do not distract the driver.

  • Everyone must always wear a seatbelt

  • No drugs, no exceptions!

  • Only decent music to be played.

  • No smelly farts!

Every passenger that got into this young lady’s car had to agree to her rules before they got a lift anywhere.

Olly soon turned this excellent idea into a template for instructors and road safety professionals to engage young drivers and encourage them to set rules for passengers. Those who’ve used it find it a great conversation starter and we know from behavioural science that planning ahead and managing expectations can prevent awkward moments later!

Each learner will receive a My Car My Rules card for their own car.
